The cultivation of medicinal plants and the development of plant-based pharmaceutical products offer important opportunities for sustainable agriculture and pharmaceutical development in arid regions. The Republic of Karakalpakstan, located in northwestern Uzbekistan, faces major environmental challenges, including soil salinization, water scarcity, drought and land degradation. These conditions create a need for medicinal plant species that can tolerate environmental stress while maintaining adequate biomass production and phytochemical quality. This article reviews the potential of medicinal plant cultivation in Karakalpakstan, with particular emphasis on licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.), a medicinal species of pharmaceutical and ecological importance. Published research indicates that licorice can be cultivated on saline soils and that appropriate biological seed treatments may improve seed germination, root biomass and glycyrrhizin content. The article also discusses the relationship between cultivation practices, harvesting, post-harvest processing, phytochemical standardization and the production of plant-based pharmaceutical preparations. A sustainable approach integrating agronomic management, chemical analysis, quality control and conservation of natural plant populations is proposed. Further experimental research is needed to identify cultivation protocols that optimize both pharmaceutical quality and economic viability under the specific environmental conditions of Karakalpakstan.
