Functional constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal problems among young children, occurring mainly due to poor dietary habits and an inactive lifestyle. A lack of fiber provided by fruits, vegetables, and grains leads to a reduction in stool volume and slows down intestinal peristalsis. Additionally, insufficient daily fluid (water) intake and frequent consumption of fast food and dry meals complicate the digestion process, causing stool to harden.
