Abstract

This article examines the main communication means of a speech community — literary (standard) language, dialect, sociolect, argot, jargon and living colloquial speech — from a sociolinguistic viewpoint. The speech community is interpreted as a collective of people linked by social, economic, political and cultural ties. The unifying, delimiting and prestigious functions of language are highlighted. The codified, polyfunctional and socially prestigious characteristics of the literary language, the regional and social varieties of dialects, the group-specific features of jargon, argot and slang, as well as the informal and dynamic nature of colloquial speech are described in detail. The article reveals the social variability of language and its significance in contemporary society. The main source used is the textbook ―Sociolinguistics‖ by Sh. Usmanova, N. Bekmuxamedova and G. Iskandarova.
